Indian food for two: how to build a first shared order
Plan an Indian restaurant order for two: choose a main, rice or bread, and a contrasting dish without ordering four similar curries.

The short answer
Start with one main you both want, then check its accompaniments before adding another dish. Butter chicken plus a contrasting vegetable dish can work; biryani may already provide the rice. This is a flexible order plan, not a fixed portion recommendation.

Compare your options
| Option | Choose it for |
|---|---|
| Butter Chicken | Charred chicken in a silky tomato-butter sauce. |
| Palak Paneer | Paneer cubes in a warmly spiced spinach sauce. |
| Hyderabadi Biryani | Fragrant layered basmati rice, spice and marinated meat. |
| Masala Dosa | Crisp fermented rice-lentil crepe with spiced potato. |
Choose the restaurant before the combination
A North Indian menu and a dosa-focused South Indian restaurant offer different starting points. Read the specialties first. At the former, compare a tomato-based curry with a spinach-based one; at the latter, start with a dosa and its accompaniments. You do not need to assemble dishes from every region in one meal.
Use contrast instead of quantity
Two rich sauces can be enjoyable, but they tell you less about your preferences than two different textures. Pair a saucy main with a crisp or rice-based format. If you choose biryani, ask whether it comes with raita or another accompaniment before adding more rice. Ask how large the dishes are rather than assuming every main feeds one person.
Agree on heat before ordering
Spice aroma, chili heat and richness are separate questions. Ask which dish can be made milder and whether chili is already in the sauce. A creamy appearance does not guarantee low heat. Let each diner add optional condiments individually when available. Shared portions are useful only when both people are comfortable with the ingredients.
Build your order
- Pick one anchor: a curry, biryani or dosa.
- Ask what rice, bread, sauce or sides are included.
- Add one contrasting dish if the serving size calls for it; keep extra rice or bread optional.
Recipes and portions vary by restaurant. This is a flavor guide, not an allergy or dietary screening tool; confirm ingredients with the cook.
Questions before your first bite
Should we order two curries?
You can, but choose distinct bases such as tomato and spinach, then check whether the accompaniments are shared. Two names do not necessarily mean two different eating experiences.
Is this a budget or calorie plan?
No. Prices, recipes and portions vary. The imaginary prices elsewhere on CraveLoop are game values and should not be used to estimate a restaurant bill.
